Volleyball Suffers First Conference Loss to Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Thomas Jefferson University volleyball team (13-8, 10-1) would go across the town for Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action, where the Rams would drop their first conference game of the season to Chestnut Hill College (10-12, 8-4) this Wednesday night.

WHAT HAPPENED
The first set saw the Rams go up 5-1, with the Griffins responding with their own three-point swing. After having the game even at 10-10 and a Jefferson point was awarded, Chestnut Hill added three more points to take the lead 13-11. A close back and forth push that saw the game go 18-17 in favor of Chestnut Hill, the Griffins were able to close the first set on a 7-1 run to take it 25-18.

The second set would be even, with the game tied at 6-6. Both teams would have three-point runs, eventually seeing Jefferson up 10-9 that would force a Chestnut Hill timeout. The Rams would go ahead 16-13 before taking three more points to make the Griffins call their second timeout. Jefferson would be able to take six of the last 10 points to win the second set 25-18 and make the match 1-1.

The third set would be a trade of leads as Jefferson would be up 5-2 before Chestnut Hill would respond with three points to make it even 5-5. Both teams would keep changing the lead and pace, until at 10-10 the Griffins would go on a 6-1 run and be ahead 16-11, forcing the Rams to call a timeout. After another Griffin point, Jefferson would claim eight of the next nine points as they would be up 19-18 and make Chestnut Hill call their own timeout. The game would be exchanged once more, with the score even at 22-22 with the Rams able to secure the next two points and be set for match point. Chestnut Hill would take advantage of three Jefferson errors and add a kill to take four points in a row and win the third set 26-24.

After an early 3-1 advantage for Jefferson to begin the fourth set, Chestnut Hill took nine of the next 11 points to be up 10-5 and make the Rams call a timeout. The Griffins would go on a five point streak to extend their lead to 15-5. The Rams would cut into the Griffins lead, making it 16-9 before two more points went in favor of Chestnut Hill. Even going on a 5-2 run and being down 20-14, the Rams still couldn't slow down Chestnut Hill as they would add four of the last six points to conclude the fourth set 25-17, taking the 3-1 victory and handing Jefferson their first CACC loss of the season.
