MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Audrey Strock netted the game-winner 57 seconds into overtime, her sixth goal of the afternoon, to give the Thomas Jefferson University women's lacrosse team (1-1) a 12-11 victory, the Rams' first of the season, at Millersville (0-1) on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marauders found the back of the net first just 18 seconds into the contest.
Carina Raymond evened the score for Jefferson 41 seconds later as the teams traded goals for the opening 10 minutes. The score was even at three when
Audrey Strock put the Rams in front for the first time at the 3:54 mark. However, Millersville answered with three in a row to close the period and took a 6-4 advantage into the second quarter.
The Marauders carried the momentum over, tallying the first two goals of the period to up the margin to four (8-4). Strock and Raymond recorded back-to-back tallies to get Jefferson within two but Millersville held the Rams scoreless for the last 11 minutes of the first half and had a 9-6 lead at the break.
Jefferson kept the Marauders off the scoresheet in the third quarter with
Erin Avanzato,
Iris Gluck, and Raymond beating the goalkeeper to tie the score at nine going into the fourth. Millersville broke its drought and posted the first two goals of the stanza for an 11-9 advantage with 5:32 to go. Strock got the Rams within one at the 3:48 mark then netted the equalizer as well on a free position shot with 1:41 left.
Both teams had an opportunity with the ball down the stretch but turned it over. The Marauders had one final chance but sent a free position shot wide with 44 seconds to play and the game went into sudden-victory overtime. Avanzato won the draw for Jefferson and the Rams were able to set up Strock, who came out from behind the net, beat a defender to open space, turned, and fired the winning shot over the goalie's left shoulder.
