Box Score The Philadelphia University men's basketball team fell
in dramatic fashion by a score of 58-56 to Cheyney University at the overtime
buzzer in a non-league game played at the Gallagher Center this
evening.
In a sluggish contest that featured stifling zone defense at
both ends of the floor, Head Coach Herb Magee's squad found
themselves in a familiar position, up 12 points with just over six
minutes to go. But like last Saturday at the Palestra
against Wilmington, the Rams' lead eroded in the closing
minutes. Unlike last Saturday however, Philadelphia
University was unable to hold on to the lead and instead the Wolves
forced overtime when sophomore guard Tyrone Smith canned a
three-point field goal to knot the game at 50-50 with :05 seconds
to play in regulation, which resulted in forcing the game to
overtime.
The five-minute extra session was scoreless until
sophomore forward Malcolm Ingram converted an old-fashioned
three-point play with 2:21 remaining. Again, the Rams failed
to hold the lead and the game became deadlocked at 56-56 and
appeared headed to a second overtime period, with just
under :30 seconds left. After a timeout, Philadelphia
University set up a play for Ingram, who narrowly missed
converting a go-ahead layup. On the other end of the
floor, Ingram fouled Wolves senior foward Fechner Jean-Phillippe,
who missed the front end of a one-and-one at the free-throw
line. The rebound was pulled down by junior guard Mike Dunn
for the Rams, but then Dunn uncharacteristically turned the ball
back over to Cheyney. The Wolves called a timeout with :12
seconds left in overtime to set up their offense. A missed
jumper by senior forward Dawud Morris with approximately :02 left
on the clock was tipped in at the buzzer by junior forward
Dominique Curry to lift the Wolves (2-2) to their second win of the
season. The loss drops the Rams to 3-6.
In the victory, Cheyney was paced by Smith's 15 points on 7-11
(63.6%) shooting from the field, as well as junior center Robert
Simpson's 12 points and nine rebounds. Philadelphia
University was led by Dunn, who finished with 15 points and
five boards. Next up for the Rams is Saturday's home game
with Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division
foe Nyack College. The tip-off is set to follow the women's
game with the Nyack Warriors-the doubleheader begins at 12:30
p.m. at the Gallagher Center.
