Rams' Second-Half Surge Proves Too Much for Eagles

Box Score

Sophomore swingman Marcus Lemon (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams; pictured) came off the bench to score 20 of his team-high 21 points in the second half as Philadelphia University overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to improve to 7-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a 70-67 comeback win today at Post University in Waterbury, Conn.  The Rams also even their overall record on the season at 10-10.  The host Eagles are now 5-4 in league play and 8-10 in all games.  Philadelphia University remains on top of the CACC South Division with the victory, while the loss drops Post to second place in the North Division.

Senior swingman Arthur Robertson (Far Rockaway, N.Y./Beach Channel) notched game highs of 23 points and 19 rebounds in the losing effort for Post.  Robertson shot 7-10 (70%) from the field, and was a near-perfect 9-10 (90%) from the free throw line.  Like Lemon, 19 of his points came in the second half for the Eagles.  Also posting double figures for the home team were freshman guard Garvin McAlister (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) with 13 points and junior forward A.J. Reitter (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) who registered 10 points off the bench.

Four players factored in double figures for the visiting Rams, led by Lemon who shot 6-15 (40%) from the floor and 6-9 (66.6%) from the charity stripe.  Sophomore forward Malcolm Ingram (Philadelphia, Pa./Solebury Prep) chipped in with 16 points and nine rebounds, while junior guard Mike Dunn (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had 15 points and senior forward Jason Hickenbottom (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) recorded 10.

The homestanding Eagles scored the first basket of the game and quickly raced out to an 11-1 lead.  Post held Philadelphia without a field goal until the 9:07 mark, when sophomore point guard Russell Frederick (Joppa, Md/Calvert Hall) hit a three-pointer, cutting the Eagles' lead to 16-8.

Post would keep the momentum in the first half, taking a 32-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

A bucket by Robertson, and a fast break layup and a three-pointer by McAlister gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game at 39-21 with 17:28 left in the second half.  But a 7-3 run by the Rams cut into the deficit, and the Eagles' lead was down to 11 points, 42-31, with 13:14 left to play.

Philadelphia continued to climb back into the contest, as a 9-0 run capped by a layup from Dunn trimmed the Post lead to 50-47 with 8:06 left in the closing frame.

The Eagles would cling to their evaporating advantage over the next several minutes, but Philadelphia finally tied the contest at the 1:58 mark with a layin by Ingram.

Then Jason Hickenbottom put the Rams up for good with a pair of free throws with :37 seconds left en route to the important three-point victory.
