Hot Shooting From Three-Point Land Keeps Rams Atop CACC South

Box Score

Sophomore point guard Russell Frederick (pictured) led a quartet of Rams into double-figure scoring with a game-high 22 points, and the team shot 50% (13-26) from beyond the three-point line, as Philadelphia University downed Bloomfield College 81-56 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) crossover contest in Bloomfield, N.J. tonight.

In addition to Frederick, sophomore forward Malcolm Ingram had 18 points and seven rebounds, fellow sophomore forward Marcus Lemon added 14 points and junior guard Mike Dunn contributed 12 points.  Head Coach Herb Magee's Rams up their record to 6-9 on the year, more importantly they are 4-0 in CACC play as they continue to remain on top of the South Division standings.  Bloomfield drops to 10-7 for the season, and they sit in fourth place in the CACC North Division with a 2-3 conference mark.

Bloomfield opened up by taking their largest lead of the contest when the game was 11-4 with 15:32 left in the first half.  The Rams countered and took a one-point lead at 18-17 with 8:27 left in the opening stanza and they would twice stretch the advantage to nine points, the latest coming at the 3:10 mark after Malcolm Ingram knocked down a jumper and was fouled on the play.  Ingram would miss the free-throw--the Rams only attempt from the charity stripe in the first half--and the Deacons would then go on an 8-0 run to close the period with Philadelphia up just 30-29.

The Bloomfield rally obviously frustrated Philadelphia University, who came out for the second half a determined bunch.  The Rams started the final twenty minutes of play with a 13-0 run of their own to make it 43-29 after a Frederick three-pointer with 15:53 remaining in the contest.  From there, it was all Philadelphia, as the Rams shot a blistering 19-28 (67.9%) from the field in the second half, finishing an impressive 31-58 (53.4%) for the entire game.  The sophomore troika of Lemon, Ingram and Frederick themselves combined to shoot 22-33 (66.6%) from the floor, accounting for the exact same percentage of the Rams' total offensive output for the night.  Senior forward Jason Hickenbottom had an impressive overall performance for the Rams tonight, contributing eight points, a game-high eight assists, seven rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal.

In the losing effort, the Deacons were led by junior guard Omari Knox (19 points), freshman forward Roahn Sheppard (12 points) and junior forward Charles Smith (11 points and a game-high eight rebounds).

The Rams look to stay on the winning side this Wednesday night, January 9, 2008 at the Gallagher Ceneter when they host Kutztown University at 8:00 p.m.  The matchup is the back-end of the women's/men's PSAC East/CACC South doubleheader, following Head Coach Tom Shirley's squad's game with West Chester at 6:00 p.m.
