Box Score Albany, NY- The #18
nationally-ranked Philadelphia University men's basketball team
(1-0) began the 2008-09 season just the way head coach Herb Magee
was hoping- with a win. The Rams defeated Saint Rose College
(0-1) in a game that was a rematch of PhilaU's season-ending NCAA
Tournament loss to SRC in quadruple-overtime last year.
Junior guard Russell Frederick (Baltimore,
MD/Calvert Hall) led all scorers with 27
points.
PhilaU junior guard Malcolm Ingram
(Philadelphia, PA/Solebury Prep) lived up to his preseason
All-America billing with 22 points and 12 boards, while Frederick
scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half by going
13-for-14 from the free-throw line in the final 20 minutes.
The game- which was locked in a 33-33 stalemate at the half, had
11 ties and 16 lead changes and neither squad took more than a five
point advantage.
Frederick came up with a clutch steal at 10:25 left in the
second half to complete a three-point play that put the Rams within
one point down just 51-50. There were four more ties throughout the
next six minutes, but Frederick sunk the first of his eight
straight free throws in the final 2:49 to put Philadelphia ahead
for good.
The Rams will host their season-opener on Wednesday, November
19th vs. the University of the District of Columbia at
7:00 p.m.
