Box Score Senior forward Jason Hickenbottom
(Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) notched 11 points, nine
rebounds, five assists and two steals in a solid all-around
performance, guiding Philadelphia University to a 64-51 win against host Chestnut Hill
College, the Rams' third victory over the Griffins this season.
The triumph for Head Coach Herb Magee's squad
lifts their overall record to 15-11, and the Rams improve to a
glistening 12-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC)
play. Conference newcomer Chestnut Hill falls to 3-19; 2-10
in league competition.
The win clinches the CACC South Division regular-season title
for the Rams, due to their 2-0 season sweep of second-place Holy
Family. In addition, Philadelphia University is now
assured of playing at home for at least the first round of the
conference tournament, with postseason play beginning on Saturday,
March 1.
Junior guard Mike Dunn (Harrisburg, Pa./Central
Dauphin) scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds for
Philadelphia, lifting his career point total to 994, just six shy
of becoming 46th men's player in University history to reach the
1,000-point milestone. Sophomore forward Malcolm
Ingram (Philadelphia, Pa./Solebury Prep) also shined in
the victory, scoring a team-high 19 points in addition to nine
rebounds and two steals. Sophomore center Mike
Yocum (Dresher, Pa./Episcopal Academy) also netted
double-figure scoring, equaling his season high of 15 points, while
also accounting for eight rebounds and three blocked
shots in the contest. Sophomore point guard Russell
Frederick (Joppa, Md./Calvert Hall) dished a game-high
seven assists while scoring five points and securing five boards.
Chestnut Hill was led by freshman forward Trenton
Davidheiser (Pottstown,
Pa./Pottstown) who posted the game's only double-double,
collecting 14 points and 12 rebounds in the defeat.
The Rams wasted little time in garnering their first
double-digit lead of the night, as Hickenbottom drained a
three-point bucket with 17:14 left in the first half putting
Philadelphia ahead 14-4. The Griffins cut the lead to 24-16
midway through the opening period, before the Rams closed with a
13-5 rally to take a comfortable 37-21 lead into the dressing room
for the halftime break.
Philadelphia held their largest lead of the night seven minutes
into the second stanza when Ingram assisted Frederick on a
fast-break layup to put the Rams on top 49-24. But things got
a little interesting over the next 11:38 as the Griffins put
together a 24-9 run, slicing the Rams' margin to 10 with 2:24
remaining in the game. But Ingram, as he has several times
this season, took over in the closing minutes, scoring six straight
points to put the Rams back up by 16 before Chestnut Hill hit a
three just before the final horn sounded to close the book on the
13-point Philadelphia win.
Next up for the newly-minted CACC South Division champions is a
visit from the Golden Falcons of Felician College this Saturday,
Feb. 16 for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off at The Gallagher Center in
the back end of the women's/men's doubleheader.
