Lerro hurls Rams to first win of the year, 4-2 over Dowling

Box Score

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. – Pitcher David Lerro gave the Philadelphia University baseball team six quality innings of work as the Rams defeated Dowling College, 4-2, in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon.

Lerro (1-0) struck out seven hitters while scattering just four hits and allowing two runs to earn the victory. Don Bradley picked up his first save by tossing a perfect ninth inning.

The Philadelphia (1-2) offense came alive, with the help of two Dowling (2-1) errors, in the fourth inning with four runs.

Shortstop Hunter Greenwood began the top of the fourth with a single and later scored from second base on a pick-off attempt gone awry. Second baseman John Sczepanski brought in designated hitter CJ Wallowitch, who walked and went to third on bad pick-off attempt, with a fielder's choice. Third baseman Kyle DeGennaro laid down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Sczepanski to score from third. Center fielder Rick Reigner drove in the fourth run with an infield single to plate first baseman Jordan Force, who reached base on a walk.

Dowling took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a one-out infield hit by Andrew Abreu that scored Sean Craig, who tripled in the previous at-bat. The Golden Lions added another run in the fifth inning on an error.

Reigner went 2-for-5 for the Rams in the win. Greenwood, Wallowitch and Burgmann each had one hit.

Dowling's Adam Brown (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up four runs (all unearned) on three hits in four innings. He struck out five. First baseman JC Brandmaier went 2-for-4 for the Golden Lions.

Philadelphia is off until Saturday, March 3 when takes on Southern Connecticut State in a doubleheader at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J. First pitch is slated for noon.
