Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Freshman midfielder Armando Canela (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) scored a pair of goals as the Philadelphia University men's soccer team earned a 3-1 Senior Day victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Concordia (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.
Before the match got underway, the team honored seniors Kyle Ferrier (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area) and David Lawrence (Wilbraham, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy).
In the opening 63 minutes, Philadelphia took 11 shots and Concordia had seven, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
Then in the 64th minute, Canela was able to break free from his defender at the top of the box and deposit a shot past Clipper keeper Ruel Gordon into the side right of the net to give the Rams (9-4-1, 7-2-1 CACC) a 1-0 lead.
Canela struck again in the 68th minute to double the advantage to 2-0. Sophomore forward Ishmaiah Calwrie (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown) won the ball in traffic near the left post of the Concordia (6-6-1, 5-5-1 CACC) net. Calwrie found a wide open Canela standing 10 yards away, who found the back of the goal for the third time this year.
Concordia got back into the match less than two minutes later with an Ovan Oakley strike to the bottom right corner of the Philadelphia net. Victor Ruiz earned an assist on the goal to close the game to 2-1.
Calwire closed the match out when he redirected a sharp-angle shot by junior midfield Victor Chagonda (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. George's) and into the Concordia net in the 80th minute. The goal is Calwrie's third of 2013.
Junior goalkeeper Thomas Attamante (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) earned his eighth win of the year by stopping three shots. Gordon finished the afternoon with seven saves.
The Rams owned a 19-9 shot advantage.
Philadelphia ends the regular season with a stretch of four straight road matches that begins on Tuesday, Oct. 22 against West Chester at 3:30 p.m.
