Box Score WILMINGTON, Del. – The Philadelphia University men's basketball team closed out its regular season with a wire-to-wire 75-71 victory over Goldey-Beacom in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest Tuesday night in the Jones Center.
With the victory, Philadelphia—a winner in 11 of its last 12 outings—improves to 22-6 overall and 16-3 against the CACC. The Rams are the CACC southern division champion and will open the CACC Tournament against Post, the north's fourth seed, on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
Goldey-Beacom ends the 2013-14 season with a 10-16 record, 8-11 in conference play.
Sophomore forward Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) had the hot-hand for the Rams as he netted a team-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Alexis also grabbed seven rebounds.
Sophomore forward Derek Johnson (Conshocken, Pa./Atlantic Christian) posted 16 points and seven boards. Sophomore guard Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) had 12 points while junior guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) poured in 10 points.
Senior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) contributed eight points, eight rebounds, and seven assists.
Donte McGill turned in an 11-of-18 shooting performance to lead Goldey-Beacom with 23 points.
Robert Sweet had 12 points, while Will Williams and Chris Gebhart posted 10 points each.
The Rams jumped out to a 17-4 advantage in the opening six minutes. Johnson led the early charge with eight points, including a pair of made 3-pointers.
Philadelphia's lead ballooned to 35-20 on an Alexis lay-up with 4:09 left in the first half.
Goldey-Beacom started the second half with an 11-4 run to close the Philadelphia lead to 44-41 on a Sweet 3-pointer at the 16:26 mark. Just under two minutes later, Schlitzer buried a 3-pointer to push the Rams advantage back up to seven (50-43).
Gebhart sank a lay-up with 4:33 left to pull the Lightning within 62-61. Baskets from Gibbs and Alexis extended the Rams' lead to 66-61 and sealed the win.
Philadelphia shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60) from the field, 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from 3-point range. Goldey-Beacom hit 47.7 percent (31-of-65) of its attempts, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) of its 3-pointers.
