PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 90-73 Senior Night victory over visiting Goldey-Beacom in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game Tuesday night in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia wraps up the regular season with a 21-7 overall record and a 15-4 mark against the conference. The Rams earned the southern division three seed and will head to Post, the second place team from the north, for a CACC Tournament quarterfinal round match-up on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.

Prior to the start of the showdown with the Lightning, the Rams honored their three senior players: Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville), Brandon Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), and Matt Powers (Philadelphia, Pa./Creative and Performing Arts).

Five Philadelphia players ended up in double figures, led by junior forward Peter Alexis' (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) 20 points and 12 rebounds. Alexis ends the regular season with 14 double-doubles.

Schlitzer poured in 19 points and dished out a team-high five assists. Junior forward Derek Johnson (Conshohocken, Pa./Atlantic Christian) and junior guard Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) contributed 17 points. Junior forward TJ Huggins (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) added 10 points and four rebounds.

Hughes contributed five points and two rebounds, while Powers scored two points.

Philadelphia took control a 13-13 contest with an 8-1 surge, capped off by a Huggins basket at the 9:57 mark to take a 21-14 lead. After Goldey-Beacom (8-20, 5-14 CACC) trimmed the Philadelphia lead to 23-19 on two Derrick Archie free throws, the Rams rattled off 14 of the next 18 points to extend the lead to 14 (37-23) on an Alexis tip-in.

The Rams—who shot 51.6 percent (16-of-31) in the first half—took a half-high 15-point cushion on a Schlitzer trey with 1:36 on the clock.

Goldey-Beacom rallied at the start of the second half, going on a 19-8 run to close the gap to 55-52 on a Joey Gatz layup at the 13:16 mark. Chris Gebhart and Sameen Swint scored five points each.

The layup prompted head coach Herb Magee to call a timeout. Philadelphia responded with a 24-6 run to break the game open and move ahead by 21 (79-58). The Rams hit nine of their 10 shot attempts during the surge, led by Alexis with nine points.

Philadelphia shot even better in the second half, hitting 62.1 percent (18-of-29) of its shots.

Getz paced five Lightning players in double figures with 19 points. Parris Ridgeway-Higgs added 13 points. Goldey-Beacom finished up shooting 42.0 percent (29-of-69) from the floor.
