Calwrie nets match winner as men's soccer downs Queens (N.Y.) 1-0

Box Score

QUEENS, N.Y. – Forward Ishmaiah Calwrie (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown) scored in the 58th minute and keeper Ben Sauer (Bel Air, Md./Perry Christian) stopped three shots as the Philadelphia University men's soccer team shutout Queens (N.Y.) 1-0 in the season opener on Friday afternoon.

On Philadelphia's first shot of the second half, Calwrie got his head on an Andrew Sauers crossing pass and beat Knight keeper James Brostowski to the right post and broke the scoreless deadlock. The assist was Sauers' first collegiate point.

Sauer and the Ram defense stood tall over the final 17:23 to preserve the shutout. Queens—who had a 16-7 shot advantage—outshot the Rams 5-0, however, the Rams backline blocked two of the attempts and Sauer made a save on a Glen Reid shot.

In the opening 45 minutes, the Rams owned a 4-0 corner-kick advantage, but were outshot by the Knights 7-3. Sauer stopped an Andras Breuer header at the 34:51 mark for his only save of the half.

Brostowski made three saves for Queens.

Philadelphia will open its home schedule against Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday, Sept. 6 at noon on Ravenhill Field. The match will be the 1,000th match played in Philadelphia University history.
