Four Basketball Players Take CACC Player, Defensive Player of the Week 


NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Four Thomas Jefferson University basketball players earned weekly awards from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) on Monday afternoon for competition that ran through February 26 – March 5. Sam Yencha and Erik Timko both took CACC Player of the Week while Haley Meinel and Ahmed Barba-Bey secured CACC Defensive Player of the Week. 

SAM YENCHA – PLAYER OF THE WEEK 
Yencha secures her fourth weekly award on the year, fifth in her career, as well as the Rams 12th award winner. She scored 25 points this week, averaging 12.5 points-per-game (ppg), while grabbing 26 rebounds (13.0 rebounds-per-game) for Jefferson to go 2-0 on the week. Yencha had 15 points and 17 rebounds in their win over Goldey-Beacom. She then had 10 points and nine rebounds in the season finale victory over Holy Family. 

HALEY MEINEL – DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 
Meinel takes her fifth weekly award this season, fourth DPOTW this year, and the Rams 13th award winner. She has won her 20th weekly award in her career, 13th defensive weekly award during her time at Jefferson as well. Meinel scored 26 points this week while stealing the ball 11 times and registering 3 blocks. She had 12 points, 6 steals, and a block over Goldey-Beacom. Meinel followed that up as she put up 14 points, 5 steals, and two blocks against Holy Family. 

ERIK TIMKO – PLAYER OF THE WEEK 
Timko is given his third weekly nod this year, fifth for the team on the season. He takes his 15th weekly award of his career. Timko scored 48 points on the week, averaging 24.0 ppg, as he went 17-of-30 on the floor. He scored 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting against Goldey-Beacom, then followed that up as he produced 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting in the Rams season finale at Holy Family. 

AHMED BARBA-BEY – DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 
Barba-Bey has his first weekly award of the season, sixth for the team, and second in his career since winning Rookie of the Week on November 29, 2021. He scored 40 points on the week, 20.0 ppg, while earning 6 steals and a block on the week. Barba-Bey scored 15 points with one steal and one block in Jefferson's victory against Goldey-Beacom. He then had 9 points, 5 steals, and 2 blocks in the Ram's victory against Holy Family. 

The men's and women's basketball team get ready for their CACC Championship Quarterfinal matchups at the Gallagher Center on Tuesday, March 5. The men start the evening with a 5:30 start against Felician University, followed by the women who take on the University of Bridgeport at 7:30 p.m.
