Women's Lacrosse Opens Season Against Southern Connecticut State


PHILADELPHIA – Hosting their season opener at Maguire Field down at Penn Charter, Thomas Jefferson University women's lacrosse (0-1) started their season with a tough matchup against Southern Connecticut State University (1-0). The Rams held a 5-1 lead before ultimately falling 8-7 to the Owls. 

WHAT HAPPENED 

  • Jefferson began with the first goal of the season as Meaghan Avanzato put it in the back of the net at the 5:30 mark in the first. After Southern Connecticut State tied it up, a yellow card gave the Rams an opportunity to get ahead. They took advantage of it as Lilly Lutz and Reagan Rogers scored to make it 3-1 after the opening 10 minutes 

  • Rogers added her second goal just 50 seconds into the second while Lutz joined in two minutes later for a 5-1 Jefferson lead. The Owls responded with two of their own goals. Jefferson led 5-3 at the break 

  • Lindley Gori opened the second half by making her shot just 1:16 into the third quarter as it was a 6-3 Jefferson advantage 

  • Southern Connecticut State responded with a 5-0 run that went into the fourth quarter and saw the Rams trail 8-6 with just 10:32 left in the game 

  • Iris Gluck cut the lead down to one as she scored with 6:17 left. Jefferson fought back as they had two shots in the final 30 seconds, but neither went in as the Rams dropped their season opener 8-7 

  • Lutz and Rogers had two goals apiece while Gori, Avanzato, and I. Gluck put up one. Ava Sztenderowicz earned 3 caused turnovers, I. Gluck won eight draw controls, and Kalyn Ammerlaan had 10 saves with three ground balls during the contest 

  • Abigail Nolan and Madison Olmstead earned two goals for the Owls while Caelan Connors made seven saves on the day
