Baseball Picks Up 3-1 Win over #18 Georgia College in Season Opener

Box Score

Milledgeville, GA- The Philadelphia University baseball team (1-0) got a 3-1 win in their season opener, over #18 preseason-ranked Georgia College & State University (1-4) on Friday night.  The Rams were led by sophomore pitcher Jared Farbman (Philadelphia, PA/ Central), who pitched six complete innings and sat down eight GCSU batters.

PhilaU held the advantage at the plate, knocking out nine hits to GCSU's two.

The Rams wasted no time as they scored all three runs in the first inning.  Four consecutive singles by sophomore Anthony DiFrancesco (Landenberg, PA/ Salesianum), junior Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA/ Delone Catholic), junior Rob Fisher (Langhorne, PA/ Archbishop Ryan) and senior Kyle Noonan (Morristown, NJ/ Morristown) and a sacrifice bunt by junior Mike Anderson (Waldwick, NJ/ Waldwick) yielded three runs and a lead PhilaU would not relinquish.  Mentzer led PhilaU, going 3-4 at the plate with a stolen base.

GCSU threatened in the bottom of the seventh as PhilaU sent junior hurler Brian Rousseau (Wantagh, NY/ Wantagh) to the mound.  With one Bobcat runner reaching on an error, GCSU scored their only run of the game off a triple.

The Rams faced a Bobcat rally in the ninth, but with runners on first and third PhilaU sophomore pitcher Kevin McGovern (Philadelphia, PA/ Archbishop Ryan) sent the final GCSU packing to secure a 3-1 win.

The maroon and gray head to Columbus State (GA) for three games over the next two days (2/14-2/15) before returning north for a three week respite before they return to action.
