Women's Basketball Makes 87-44 Statement in Opening Contest

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University women's basketball team (1-0) was not shy in an 87-44 dissecting of the Washington Adventist University Shock (0-2) on Thursday evening in the Gallagher Athletic Center.

PhilaU women's coach Tom Shirley and Ram's men's coach Herb Magee were honored for reaching 1,500 combined victories in a pre-game ceremony.  Coach Shirley has 593 wins, while Coach Magee totals 908.The milestone was reached on Tuesday (11/16) in a men's 66-60 win at St. Thomas Aquinas College.  Only one pair of active coaches, UConn's Geno Auriemma and Jim Calhoun, have more-with 1,558 at the start of the 2010-11 season. 

In tonight's home-opener, Shirley's Rams shot 45% from the floor-led by the frontcourt duo of junior forward Christine Wooding and sophomore forward Kristen Blye-both with 19 points. 

WAU's Vanessa Rice led all scorers with 24 points. 

It was all PhilaU from the whistle, as the home squad forced 26 WAU turnovers on the night.  The Rams led 45-16 at the half, helped by a 26-15 rebounding edge.  PhilaU senior guard Kate Brennan tallied a game-high 11 rebounds and added 14 points.

PhilaU's largest lead of the night came with seven minutes to play in the second half on a made foul shot by freshman guard Meg Finn to make it 74-24, a 50 point differential.  Finn tallied 15 points and nine assists in her collegiate debut.

Also racking up double digits was PhilaU junior guard Steph Agger, whose 10 points and three steals aided the Ram win.

PhilaU returns to action on Tuesday (11/23) in a road game at West Chester University at 6 p.m.
