Philadelphia, PA- Five goals from sophomore
midfielder Caribeth Shappell (Lancaster, PA/
Cocalico) was almost enough, but the Philadelphia University
women's lacrosse team (0-1) opened the 2010 season with a 14-13
loss to St. Anselm College (2-1) on Saturday afternoon at Drexel
University's Vidas Field.
Shappell led the Lady Ram's with seven points on the day.
The Lady Rams took an early lead on Shappell's first score of
the day at 29:05 in the first, but St. A's went on a 3-0 run to
pull ahead. PhilaU senior midfielder Kathleen
Maurer (Rochester, NY/ Our Lady of Mercy) added a goal at
18:30 and Shappell scored three more times in that stanza, but
PhilaU trailed 7-6 at the break. Maurer compiled five points
in the contest.
PhilaU sophomore attack Taylor Peltzer
(Holland, PA/ Archbishop Wood) tied it at 7's at 22:43 in the
second half, and Shappell nudged in a free position shot to take
the lead 8-7, but St. A's got two scores to pull ahead again.
Peltzer had two points in the game.
In the final two minutes of action, Maurer scored again to make
it 13-12 but St. A's Tia Karon would give her team the game-winner
with a shot at 1:12. Peltzer's late tally with just one
minute remaining would be all the Lady Rams could muster as they
fell 14-13.
PhilaU senior goalie Kat Sullivan (Mt. Laurel,
NJ/ Lenape) had 11 saves for the Lady Rams.
PhilaU returns to action on Saturday (3/13) vs. Molloy College
at noon, held at PhilaU's Ravenhill Field.
