Box Score 2 West Palm Beach, FL- Philadelphia University baseball (1-9) and first-year head coach Pat Horvath picked up the first win of 2011 (and Horvath's first at PhilaU) in a 6-5 win over St. Michael's College (2-2) on Tuesday morning. The Rams fell 9-1 in the nightcap to UMass-Lowell.
Against SMC, the Rams trailed 5-3 in the eighth inning after scoring three runs in the fifth on two errors and a sacrifice bunt (by John Sczepanski).
In the ninth and final inning, PhilaU scored three runs - on a two-RBI single to centerfield from Rick Reigner and then Reigner stole home for the winning run. In the bullpen, PhilaU freshman Rob Spragis got the win in 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run, while sophomore Mike Ross went 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.
In the loss to UMass-Lowell, senior shortstop Anthony DiFrancesco doubled in Sczepanski to score the Ram's single run.
Today's contests complete the team's Florida trip. The Rams play next on the road on Sunday (3/20) in a noon doubleheader at Caldwell College, their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match-up this season.
