Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team closed out its season-opening six-game home stand with a 13-10 loss to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Dominican (N.Y.) Saturday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.
Attack Emily Ray paced Philadelphia (2-4, 2-2 CACC) with three goals and one assist. Ray is now 28 goals away from the 100-career goal mark. Attack Taylor Peltzer moved with 12 points from 200 in her career after tallying two goals and two assists.
Midfielder Caribeth Shappell had a three-point day with a goal and two assists. Defender Andrea Saracco picked up a game-high six ground balls.
The Chargers (2-4, 2-2 CACC) got seven points (six goals, one assist), four ground balls and two draw controls from attack Allison Smithwick. Attacks Gina Sparaco and Brianna Blank both scored twice.
The Lady Rams' Ellen Wright stopped 14 shots, while the Chargers' Veronica Iozzi made six saves. Dominican owned a 30-23 shot advantage.
Smithwick gave Dominican a 3-1 lead at 20:56 mark of the first half with back-to-back goals that were separated by 2:36. After Peltzer scored the pull Philadelphia within 4-3, the Chargers rattled off three straight goals to open up a 7-3 advantage.
Philadelphia responded with a late barrage in the final five minutes, which included two goals from Ray and one from Peltzer, to close the gap to 7-6.
The onslaught continued at the start of the second half as the Lady Rams scored four times in a span of 2:31 to take a 10-7 lead. Attack Allison Brian, midfielders Carli DiCioccio and Lauren Hartman, and Ray each scored during the outburst.
Dominican came back with the game's final six goals, including three from Smithwick, over the final 27:29.
Philadelphia has its first road test of the season on Sunday, March 25 with a non-conference tilt at East Stroudsburg starting at 1 p.m.
