Box Score NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Philadelphia University men's soccer team is heading to its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament final after converting all five of its penalty kick attempts to get past Dominican (N.Y.) in the semifinal round Tuesday afternoon at the Wilmington University Athletics Complex. During the first 110 minutes, the teams played to a 1-1 draw.
The third-seeded Rams (11-7-2) will take on the number one seed Post—who needed penalty kicks to advance over Wilmington (Del.) after a one-all draw in the other semifinal—for the conference title on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. in New Castle, Del.
During the regular season, Post defeated Philadelphia 2-1 in double overtime on Oct. 13 in Waterbury Conn.
The first shooter in the shootout freshman midfielder Armando Canela (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) scored to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Philadelphia was then given a huge advantage as Dominican's (11-6-3) Jorge Zubillaga fired the Chargers' first shot over the crossbar.
The Rams walked right through the open door as sophomore defenders Chris Kulczytzky (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock N.) and Angelo Dambalas (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), and sophomore forwards Ishmaiah Calwrie (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown) and Ryan Schroy (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) all made their penalty kicks to give Philadelphia the shootout win, 5-3.
The match was scoreless until 79:21 when Sony Narro fired a blast from the top of the penalty area into the goal to put the second-seeded Chargers ahead 1-0.
Philadelphia's deficit was short lived as Calwrie picked up a loose ball, and after a few quick touches, put his shot by keeper Andre Ruiz just 1:47 later to level the match at one. It was Calwrie's team-leading fifth goal of the year.
In overtime, Dominican fired two shots at Philadelphia keeper Neil Kwiatkowski (Schnectady, N.Y./Duanesburg), who made both saves to send the match to the shootout.
Kwiatkowski finished the match with nine saves, while Ruiz posted one stop for the Chargers.
Dominican outshot Philadelphia 16-4 and had an 8-4 corner kick edge.
