Box Score 2 FLEMINGTON, N.J. – The Philadelphia University baseball team wrapped up its four-game series with UMass-Lowell at Diamond Nation on Monday and suffered a pair of setbacks, 8-2 in game one and 9-1 in eight innings during the nightcap.
Senior Russell Trojan (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O' Hara) turned in a solid pitching performance during the opening contest as he posted seven strikeouts in his 5.2 innings of work. Trojan allowed three runs on six hits.
River Hawk starter Christian Lavoie gave up a pair of unearned runs while scattering six hits in 8.2 innings.
The Rams (1-3) scored their two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Junior catcher TJ Burgmann (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College HS) and junior first baseman Jordan Force (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) opened the inning off with singles. Freshman second baseman Michael Treglia (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) hit a fly ball to left, which was dropped and allowed Burgmann to score. Force crossed the plate on a single by junior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner).
James Katsiroubas had three hits and drove in a run in the first and seventh innings for UMass-Lowell (3-1). Jimmy Ricoy and Matt Sanchez also drove in two runs each.
Philadelphia's Casey O'Donnell (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and UMass-Lowell's Tyler Toyfair were locked in a pitcher's duel in the early stages of the nightcap.
In his first collegiate start, O'Donnell went 5.1 innings and struck out eight batters, including a string of seven-in-a-row from the first through the third inning. He gave up one run on just two hits.
Toyfair threw six innings, surrendered one run on three hits, and fanned three.
The River Hawks broke the game open in the eighth as they sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight times on four hits, five walks, a hit batter, and a sacrifice fly.
UMass-Lowell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a one-out single to center by Ryan Gendron.
Philadelphia responded in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore shortstop Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) lofted a sacrifice fly to plate sophomore third baseman Robert Pelaez (Miami, Fla./Miami-Sunset), who was hit by a pitch to open the inning, from third.
Sophomore designated hitter Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had two of Philadelphia's five hits.
Mike Calzetta threw one scoreless inning to earn the win, while freshman Cory Dean (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) took the loss.
Philadelphia is off until Saturday, March 9 when it travels to Millersville for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
