Balanced attack carries women's basketball to 60-50 win over College of Saint Rose

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia University women's basketball team had three players score in double figures in a 60-50 non-conference victory over the College of Saint Rose Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

Forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) came off-the-bench to record a game-high 16 points, on 7-of-11 shooting, and grab six rebounds in 20 minutes of action. Forward Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) hit seven of her 14 shot attempts to finish with 14 points, while guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) poured in 13 points.

Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) added nine points, a career-high six assists, and a career-high six steals.

Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) opened the contest with a pair of 3-pointers to help get the Rams (2-0) out to an early 9-4 lead. 

The Golden Knights (1-1) came back with an 8-2 surge to take a 12-11 advatange on a Tyler Hansen triple at the 14:27 mark. After trading jump shots, Jacobs would score five straight points that allowed the Rams to regain an 18-14 lead with 10:11 left in the half.

With the lead trimmed to 18-17, Newell hit three straight baskets to push the gap up to 24-17.

Saint Rose started the second half with back-to-back jumpers by Kelsey Glanzman and Staci Barrett to grab a 29-28 advatnage with 17:28 left. It would be the final time the Rams would trail as they answered with a 10-3 run over a 2:26 span, capped by a Jacobs layup, to go ahead 38-32.

Philadelphia's advantage hit double-figures for the first time at the 8:27 mark when Young connected on a 3-pointer to make the score 52-41. The gap reached 14 points (55-41), a game-high, on a Heck basket with 5:02 left.

Jamie Hutcheson led the Golden Knights with 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Hansen had 10 points. 

The Rams shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field, and the Golden Knights connected on 37.0 percent (20-of-54) of their shots. Saint Rose owned a slim 36-34 rebounding edge.

Philadelphia heads to Georgian Court for its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m.
