Women's basketball upended by Bentley 69-60

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team suffered a 69-60 loss to visiting Bentley in a non-conference contest Sunday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

The Rams (0-2) had three players scoring in double figures, led by Bria Young's (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) 16 points. Young also dished out five assists, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded three steals.

Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) contributed 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) poured in 13 points.

The Rams and Falcons (2-0) went back and forth swapping the lead a total of six times in the opening quarter.  Philadelphia erased an early 7-4 deficit with a 12-3 surge, five points coming from Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood), to take a 16-10 lead on a Newell jumper with 3:54 left in the quarter.

Bentley responded by hitting four straight baskets, including two 3-pointers, score 10 points in a row to reclaim a four-point cushion (20-16). Megan Lewis netted five of her team and game-high 17 points in the run.

Day started the second quarter scoring off with a 3-pointer and sparked a 9-3 surge that allowed the Rams to tie the score at 28 on a Young jumper at the 4:57 mark. Bentley's Jane White stopped the run by draining a triple. The bucket started a 6-1 run to give the Falcons a 34-29 halftime lead.

The Falcons hit three 3-pointers, two by Amy McConnell, during an 11-3 run to open the third quarter and push the gap to 45-32. An Arnao three-point play with 1:29 left in the third and a Young 3-point basket on the Rams' next possession got them back within five (49-44).

After Bentley reclaimed a 10-point lead (56-46) on two Lauren Green free throws 1:56 into the fourth, Philadelphia would get as close as six the rest of the way.

Along with Lewis, Jen Gemma (13 points) and Jane White (10 points) also had a double-digit point total.

Philadelphia opens Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play against the University of the Sciences on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
