Women's basketball falls to Glenville State

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped after a 91-74 loss to Glenville State in the opening game of the 51st Annual Pocono Classic hosted by East Stroudsburg University on Saturday.

The Rams (3-3), who made a season-best eight 3-pointers in the loss, had four players score in double figures, led by Bria Young's (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) 18 points. Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) knocked down five of her 10 3-point attempts to finish with 17 points.

Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) each had a double-double. Arnao contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Newell racked up 12 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocked shots.

Philadelphia made three of its first six shots, while forcing Glenville State (4-1) to miss its seven attempts to get out to a 7-0 first quarter lead. The Pioneers would find their offense, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to go ahead 11-9 on a Kristin DesRocher triple at the 4:53 mark.

Erin Rafter (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) got the Rams back on track with a layup on the team's next possession to start a run of six straight points to make the score 15-11 in Philadelphia's favor. An Arnao layup with 55 seconds remaining gave the Rams a 17-16 lead at the end of the quarter.

After trading baskets for the opening 5:59 of the second, Sky Lewis put back a Brittany Jackson miss to start an 11-3 run that would span the rest of the quarter to give Glenville State a 34-28 halftime lead.

The Pioneers scored six of the first eight points in the third to extend their lead to 40-30 on a Paris McLeod bucket. After Day nailed a triple to pull the Rams within seven (40-33), Glenville State went on a 9-1 run, capped by a La'Shuaghn layup at the 7:13 mark, to push the gap to 49-34.

The margin remained in double figures the rest of the way.

McLeod was Glenville State's leading scorer with 19 points in 20 minutes of action. DesRocher came off the bench to add 14 points.

Philadelphia shot 38.2 percent from the field, while Glenville State hit 36.3 percent of its shots. The Pioneers scored 28 points off of turnovers.

Philadelphia will face host East Stroudsburg on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m.
