Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) poured in a career-high 21 points while Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) had 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Philadelphia University women's basketball team opened 2016 with a 76-45 victory over Washington Adventist Monday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.
Young and Newell both had solid shooting performances for the Rams (9-5), who shot 40.3 percent as a team. Young—who also had eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists—shot 9-of-16 from the field and Newell made eight of her 12 attempts.
Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) knocked down four 3-pointers to contribute 14 points.
Philadelphia came out in a full-court press and forced Washington Adventist (4-9) to turn the ball over on their first possessions to help the Rams get out to a quick 7-0 lead. With the lead down to 11-6, the Rams outscored the Shock 16-5 over the next 6:22 to go up 27-11 on a Newell bucket 30 seconds before the end of the quarter.
Olivia Turner, Washington Adventist's leading scorer with 11 points, made a jumper with 5:14 left in the opening half to trim the Philadelphia lead to 33-23. That would be as close as the Shock would get as Newell responded with consecutive baskets to start a 6-0 surge to push the margin to 16.
Valez Jackson (Yeadon, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) capped an 8-0 run with a pair of free throws and gave Philadelphia a game-high 34-point advantage (74-40) with 2:30 left in the final quarter.
Behind Newell's 12 boards and 10 more from Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood), Philadelphia owned the glass, outrebounding Washington Adventist 55-25. The 55 rebounds are a season high.
Jerria Brown-McDaniel and Demyra Selby added 10 points each for the Shock.
The Rams have Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play in for them for the rest of the season, starting with a home game against Concordia (N.Y.) on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 5 p.m.
