Women's lacrosse pulls away for 13-11 victory over Queens (N.Y.)

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Isabella DiGnazio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Twp.) capped a five-goal day by scoring twice in the final 4:13 of regulation to give the Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team a 13-11 victory over visiting Queens (N.Y.) Tuesday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.

The Rams (2-3) were up by two after Liz Mower (Harlersville, Pa./Souderton Area) buried a free-position shot—as part of a four-goal, three-assist performance—with 9:59 left to make the score 11-9.

Queens (5-2) came back with two free-position goals to knot the match at 11. Mary Pat Gibble capped off a four-goal second half at the 7:30 to bring the Knights within one. Patriece Ausili finished off her hat-trick with the game-tying goal with 4:46 left.

After the Knights scored the equalizer, Katie Parent (Millville, N.J./Millville) was able to secure possession for the Rams with a huge draw control, one of seven that she recorded. Parent quickly found DiGnazio, who ended up doing the rest as she ran past a defender and beat the Knights' Krista Ancona for the go-ahead goal at the 4:13 mark.

Then, Philadelphia turned to Corrine Etter (Millville, N.J./Millville)—normally an attack but forced to make her goaltending debut—who made two big saves to preserve the one-goal lead. The first clutch save came on a Carly Chierico free-position shot with 3:52 on the clock. One minute later, Etter kicked aside an Alyssa Walker attempt at the goal and Courtney Shaw (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) picked up the ground ball to give the Rams possession.

Philadelphia worked the clock until Shaw found DiGnazio in front of a wide-open net, as Ancona was outside of her crease playing defense, with 18 seconds left for the clinching goal.

Laura Dunne (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) scored twice for the Rams in the win, while Samantha Ryder (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and Shaw added one each. Shaw also led Philadelphia with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

In goal, Etter finished the day with seven saves and Ancona stopped nine saves.

Philadelphia scored three of the final four goals of the opening half to lead 5-4 at the half, the Rams' first halftime advantage of the season.

The Rams head to St. Thomas Aquinas for a non-conference match on Saturday, March 26 at noon.
