Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University women's basketball team (17-11, 13-6 CACC) finished the regular season with its ninth consecutive victory, downing Holy Family (16-10, 14-5 CACC), 72-59 at the Gallagher Center on Saturday.
The Rams will take the win streak into the CACC Tournament, in which Jefferson will travel to Dominican for the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m.
GAMEPLAY
With the score even at five early on, Jefferson tallied six of the next seven to go ahead 11-6. The Rams retained a five-point advantage (18-13) heading into the second. Leading 20-17, Jefferson upped the margin to 11 (28-17) with an 8-0 run. Senior Alynna Williams and freshman Haley Meinel each had four points in the stretch. A three by Williams (0:58) increased the advantage to 13 (35-22) at halftime.
Holy Family started the third with five points but the Rams responded with seven for a 15-point lead (42-27). Williams hit back-to-back threes (3:09, 2:10) to make it 50-33. Jefferson had a 20-point cushion (57-37) going into the fourth. Williams opened the frame with a pair of baskets to give the Rams their largest advantage in the contest (61-37). The Tigers were able to close the gap to 13 but did not get any closer.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Williams totaled 32 points for her fourth 30-point effort of the season. She shot 13-of-25, 6-of-12 from three.
- Meinel ended with 18 points, seven steals and five assists.
- Senior Ayoola Oguntuase, junior Sabria Lytes and sophomore Maddie Haney all grabbed six rebounds.
- Freshman Morgan Robinson chipped in four assists, four boards and two steals.
AS A TEAM
- The Rams shot 44.1% (30-for-68) from the field, 46.7% (7-for-15) from three and 83.3% (5-for-6) from the line.
- Jefferson forced 26 turnovers and turned them into 35 points.
NOTES
- The Rams honored seniors Alynna Williams and Ayoola Oguntuase prior to the game.
- Williams moved into second place in program history with 233 three-pointers and is just six behind all-time leader Rachel Day (239).
- It was head coach Tom Shirley's 794th career win (645 at Jefferson).
