The 1970 Men’s Basketball Team remains the most celebrated team in the school’s illustrious history, capturing the national championship with a 76-65 win over Tennessee State. Under the guidance of Head Coach Herb Magee, the Rams lost two of their first three contests during that magical season, only to post 28 consecutive victories to finish with a 29-2 overall record. Led by the senior trio of Jim McGilvery, Carlton Poole and captain John Pierantozzi, the Rams’ margin of victory through the NCAA Tournament was 23.8 ppg. McGilvery led the team in scoring and rebounding with 19.5 ppg and 13.3 rpg while Poole added 17.9 ppg to go along with 11.5 rpg.
